Dog Laparoscopic Surgery

Brook-Falls Provides Laparoscopic Surgery for Pets

Laparoscopic surgery, also referred to as keyhole surgery due to its minimally invasive nature, involves precise abdominal exploration using specialized equipment.

The procedure begins with a small needle insertion into the abdomen to introduce gas, facilitating enhanced visualization. Subsequently, two or three small incisions are made for the laparoscope (camera) and surgical instruments. Surgical maneuvers are performed while the images are displayed on a large screen in the surgical suite. Upon completion, the instruments are removed, and the small incisions are sutured closed.

This surgical technique offers various advantages. The smaller incisions promote quicker healing and reduced post-operative discomfort, leading to shorter recovery periods and less time spent wearing the dreaded cone. Additionally, laparoscopic procedures tend to be swifter compared to traditional open abdominal surgery, minimizing anesthesia duration for pets. Furthermore, the reduced incision size lowers the risk of infection by limiting abdominal organ exposure to potential contaminants. Enhanced visibility of the abdomen is achieved through the utilization of camera equipment.

Laparoscopic Surgery Encompasses a Range of Procedures, Including:

  • Spays
  • Retained-testicle neuters
  • Intestinal foreign body removal
  • Bladder stone removal
  • Stomach tacking
  • Biopsies and organ removal
