Understanding Anesthesia for Your Pet
Anesthesia can be a source of concern for many pet owners, but advancements in modern anesthetics have significantly reduced associated risks.
Utilization of Safe Anesthetics Pets undergo anesthesia with the same drugs used in complex human surgeries like heart and kidney transplants. These anesthetics are safe and effective, even for frail animals. The risks of not addressing necessary procedures, such as dental cleanings or tumor removals, often outweigh the risks of anesthesia.
Pre-Operative Assessments Before any procedure, we conduct pre-operative blood tests and X-rays to assess your pet’s health and determine the safety of anesthesia. Even apparently healthy animals can have underlying organ issues that require detection through testing.
Monitoring During Surgery Throughout the procedure, your pet is closely monitored for vital signs like blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and cardiac function. Certified veterinary technicians or doctors administer anesthesia and adjust dosages as needed. IV fluids may be administered to support kidney or liver function and aid in recovery.
Safe Recovery With diligent care and monitoring, pets typically recover from anesthesia and return home in good health, regardless of age.
