In late August, at took in an injured juvenile after being hit by a car. Unfortunately, the injured sandhill crane suffered a fracture along its lower left leg, between its knee and ankle. Due to their long-legged anatomy and stress in captivity, this can be a challenging injury to heal. Fortunately, with efforts from Marty Thompson and Dr. Molly Lien at Brook Falls Veterinary Hospital, the crane received orthopedic surgery on August 26, 2019.

During surgery, Dr. Lien placed a fixation system that consisted of a pin through her lower leg bone (called . Also, cross pins were put through this bone and connected by an acrylic fixation system.

The crane recovered from this lengthy procedure, and after several rechecks, she slowly continues to heal from her fracture. She also just started eating on her own.

The sandhill crane still has a long road to recovery, but the goal is to release her later this fall so she can hopefully migrate with a flock.
